CLYBOURNE PARK (Asst. Sound Designer)
Nancy T. Hansen Theatre - Purdue University - April 2018
Sound Design by Zackery A. Bennett
Directed by Amy Lynn Budd

Written by Bruce Norris, this play is a response to Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. The play takes a jab at race and real estate in Clybourne Park, a fictional Chicago neighborhood. The play begins in 1959 as a black family moves into a white enclave. Act Two takes us back to the same house in 2009 as gentrification sets in and the roles are reversed.

The role of sound in this play was to contrast the bigotry and hate inside the home with the stereotyped, utopic, sounds of a 1950's neighborhood.  In the second act, the harsh sounds of a less ideal neighborhood enhance the building racial tensions that are swelling in the now crumbling home.

My role as the Assistant Sound Designer was to glue myself to the Sound Designer and never leave his side. I would update cue sheets, pull specific sounds, help make artistic decisions when requested, attend rehearsals, design meetings, and production meetings. I was always available for the designer to bounce ideas off of and to take some of the load off by communicating with other departments.
