Maine State Music Theatre
Sound Intern - Summer 2017
About:
During the summer of 2017, I worked as the sound intern at Maine State Music Theatre (MSMT) in Brunswick, ME. In that time, I helped open eight shows and ran 135 performances. For most productions, my position was backstage as the A2 or as the Sound Tech. As the Sound Technician, I would assist the A2 by fixing problems that arise during a performance like microphone malfunctions and sweat-outs, pit malfunctions and/or actor concerns regarding sound. As the A2, the position encapsulates all the duties as the Sound Tech, but I would be in direct communication with the Mixer, listening to microphones and monitoring the wireless receivers to spot any microphone issues as fast as possible.
There were a few shows where I was out in the house mixing each performance. Besides making sure every line in the show was intelligible, I would work with the Sound Designer to make sure I mix it to their specifications. Before tech rehearsals started, the sound designer and I would attend some designer runs of the show to take notes, mark scripts and create necessary control groups. These runs would also help me understand the vision of the designer. Besides mixing the show, I would also be in communication with my A2 backstage to fix issues and check actors microphones that I felt weren't sounding right. This requires quick communication skills so I can get them the info they need to fix the mic as fast as possible so I can continue focusing on the show.

"Winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize. Becca and Howie have a picture perfect family life in the suburbs of New York until an accident takes the life of their four-year old son. Then Becca’s younger, irresponsible sister, Izzy, announces that she is pregnant: there will now be a new child in the family. Becca’s mother, Nat, badgers Becca about her grieving process, and Jason, the young driver who killed their son, shows up to ask forgiveness. Rabbit Hole delves into the complexity of a family navigating deep grief, and learning what it means to live a fruitful life when things fall apart." - cla.purdue.edu
Some of my primary tasks for Rabbit Hole include Calibration of the sound system, running the load-in and strike of sound equipment, creating speaker plots and comping / editing dialogue for a "home video" that plays in the show. You can see the paperwork below and hear the cue in which the dialogue editing was used with a composition made by Jing Zhao
Kinky Boots National Tour (Shop Build Intern)
Masque Sound - East Rutherford, NJ - August 2016
In the summer of 2016, I worked under Sound Designer David Patridge on the shop build for the Kinky Boots National Tour at Masque Sound in East Rutherford, NJ. For the build, the sound team and I worked on organizing and testing the sound system for the tour, as well as making/creating any needed adjustments to the system.
Beaches (Sound Intern)
Drury Lane Theatre - Oakbrook, IL - Summer 2015
Sound Design By Kai Harada
"Beaches follows two extraordinary friends through 30 years of camaraderie, laughter and sorrow. Vivacious, outlandish Cee Cee and beautiful, privileged Bertie meet as children and become fast friends. From pen-pals to roommates to romantic rivals, Cee Cee and Bertie’s oil-and-water friendship perseveres through even the most tragic trials. With a touching vulnerability, Beaches exemplies the triumph of the human spirit and the bonds of sisterhood." - drurylanetheatre.com
I was the sound intern for Beaches. Although primarily a learning experience, I helped the entire sound crew with various tasks including organization / labelling and communication between the sound team and actors / musicians.

Written by Naomi Iizuka, This play tackles the problem of sexual assault among teens and young adults. The play is based off the events taking place in Steubenville, Ohio in 2013 when two high school football players were found guilty for rape after sexually assaulting a girl at a party.
This show was not a musical, but was treated as a musical from my standpoint. With the music pumping at a similar volume to that of a college party and the show was in a small, thrust configured, theatre. So there's no way the audience could hear the actors. We decided to give the actors wireless handhelds for their monologues during party scenes. This required the assistant sound designer and I to create scenes and control groups to mix the actors to the loud music. I was the only one on the sound team at each performance. This essentially made me the mixer and the wireless mic tech. If a mic had issues, I would get in touch with the stage management team backstage to solve the issue.
