With One (Composer / Producer)

This is a composition I made for Choreographer Renee Murray. The dance was showcased at the Hudson Guild Theater in NYC and was submitted to many contemporary dance competitions around the U.S. The dance explores the connection and intimacy one can feel within a relationship. The choreography is based on movement found within human interactions. The dancers explore their individual wants within the context of their relationship, sometimes manipulating their partner in order to fill their desire. To really develop this idea into a piece of music, I really tried to play the instruments entirely out of impulse. But, because it's based off human interaction, I made sure I had friends in the studio with me. I had my brother play a small piano part and my buddy chandler play drums. I would play the simple part of the song along with them and I told them to add whatever extra licks or fills they found necessary based on the mood of the day or whatever would satisfy their desire. This process lead to some great use of different colors and it led all of us to play our instruments in ways we wouldn't have thought of before.
