Hamlet (Sound Designer / Composer)
Purdue University - Spring 2018
Course: Advanced Sound Design

Course:

In this course, I learned how to use music as a chariot. I synthesized research, analyzed the play, and collaborated with a director to effectively underscore, and design, the emotions of the play. The course also taught me how to apply standard production techniques to produce a complete sound score in MOTU Digital Performer for a major play.

Paperwork:

Note: No speaker plots or system drawings were necessary for the class.

Cue Sequences:

To the left are three cue sequences that I composed with dialogue. The goal was to work with the director to compose to the emotion and mood of each scene. You will also hear a few sound samples I created for each scene. Below are pictures of my MOTU Digital Performer markers for each sequence if you would like to follow along to hear where each theme comes in.

Final:

For the final project, I teamed up with actors Matt Duncan and Katrina Guzman to do a live recording of the "Get Thee to a Nunnery" scene. Spread amongst two days, we rehearsed the scene and then recorded it. I ran my composition for this scene in Qlab and ran it as if it were a live performance. The actors were both mic'd as well as the director. A stereo feed of my 5.1 composition in Qlab, as well as all three mics, were sent to personal Aviom units so that everyone could control their own personal mix as we ran the scene. After recording, I mixed the actors performance with my captured Qlab performance. Below you can hear a stereo mixdown of the live recording!
