Sound Design by Jose Conejo

Written by Mary Zimmerman, this play is broken up into seven different lesser-known fairy tales. Every tale is interrupted by the first half of the next tale. The central fairy tale plays straight through and is then followed by the second half of each tale in the reverse order. The play is about a child who's parents leave her with a frightening babysitter who reads the fairy tales from his book. The audience later realizes that the whole play was a dream.
The role of sound in this play was to engross the audience into the dream-like fairy tales. The sound design, in conjunction with Jing Zhao's composition, used a color palette that consisted of various thunder claps, pads and music boxes to give the sense of childhood and the fear of the nightmarish, almost gruesome, stories. My duties as the Assistant Sound Designer included filming of rehearsals for the designer and composer, attending all rehearsals to relay information from the director to the designer and vice versa, helping with preliminary paperwork and drawings as well as overall organization and documentation.
